When I was a child, he was the Goblin King. When I was a teenager, he was Ziggy Stardust. As an adult, he is and will forever be David Bowie. He was the thread that I could use to stitch together an understanding with my parents when I was a wild haired kid, and his albums have always been the thing that I could turn to when things were tough. I must have listened to Hunky Dory a hundred times or more when my mom passed away. It’s a rare thing for the death of a celebrity to get to me as much as this one has, but he’s much more than that to me. He changed the world and they way that people think about each other in an unfathomable way, and he will be remembered forever. A lot of his lyrics make me laugh, a lot of his songs make me cry, but no song has ever had just the right thing at the right time for me like Rock & Roll Suicide:
Oh no love, you’re not alone
You’re watching yourself but you’re too unfair
You got your head all tangled up but if i could only
Make you care
Oh no love, you’re not alone
No matter what or who you’ve been
No matter when or where you’ve seen
All the knives seem to lacerate your brain
I’ve had my share, I’ll help you with the pain
You’re not alone
You will be missed.
